With a view to the ongoing developments in the EU legal framework on artificial intelligence (AI), the „Justice, fundamental rights, and Artificial Intelligence“ (JuLIA) Project focuses on the protection of fundamental rights affected by (semi-)automated decision making in five domains:

judicial decision making, artificial intelligence and fundamental rights: the limits of predictive justice in civil and criminal proceedings;

artificial intelligence and public administration: the limits of algorithmic governance;

artificial intelligence and the protection of health as a fundamental right: (1) AI and decision-making in the field of health, and (2) AI and crisis management in the field of health and beyond: the pandemic experience;

artificial intelligence, judicial dialogue and consumer protection in individual and mass litigation;

artificial intelligence and data protection.

Judges are at the crossroads between the algorithmic black box of automated decision making and its impact on citizens (including in their capacity as consumers) and society as a whole. This Project aims to improve the understanding of algorithmic decision making and its legal implications for fair trial, fair administrative proceedings and other fundamental rights and principles, by delivering

a database with useful materials and case law;

training methodology, materials and handbooks in the five domains addressed by the project;

transnational training events, justice laboratories and e-learning modules making the outcomes available for wider audience of legal professionals.

The project is funded by the European Union’s Justice Programme (2021-2027) under Grant Agreement 101046631.
