On 18-19 September 2023, in Naples, Italy, JuLIA organized its first transnational training event dedicated to the use of artificial intelligence (AI) systems by the justice systems and the potential uses, risks and challenges for fundamental rights in this regard.
The training covered a number of issues, including: purposes and areas of application when using AI by the judiciary and how it is linked to other activities performed by the judicial authorities; AI as a tool for assessing how judges administer justice, related (algorithmic) biases and opportunities for improvement; (implemented) automation initiatives in organizing case files, supporting judges' reading/writing, developing template cases, supporting decision-making processes, case-law based predictive justice, etc.; legitimacy of tools based on artificial intelligence techniques in light of fundamental rights protection; challenges in judicial decision-making fully or partially realized by artificial intelligence techniques; and others. Detailed agenda and materials from the event are available here.
LIBRe Foundation was presented by Alexandra Tsvetkova, managing director of the organization.
