On 18-19 September 2023, in Naples, Italy, JuLIA organized its first transnational training event dedicated to the use of artificial intelligence (AI) systems by the justice systems and the potential uses, risks and challenges for fundamental rights in this regard.
The issues addressed include:
Use of AI by the judiciary: purposes, areas of application, links to other activities performed by the judicial authorities
Artificial intelligence as a tool for assessing how judges administer justice: training, evaluation and monitoring of how justice is administered, (algorithmic) biases and opportunities for improvement
(Implemented) automation initiatives: organizing case files; supporting judges' reading, writing, etc.; developing template cases; supporting decision-making processes; case-law based predictive justice, etc.
Legitimacy of tools based on artificial intelligence techniques in light of fundamental rights protection
Challenges in judicial decision-making fully or partially realized by artificial intelligence techniques
