Call for Judges: Artificial Intelligence and Public Administration


JuLIA (Justice, Fundamental Rights and Artificial Intelligence) is an European research project working on the impact of automated decision making via AI techniques on courts and the protection of fundamental rights in this regard. The project opens a call for European judges interested in to take part in the next transnational training event that is to take place in Groningen, the Netherlands, in September 2024. This workshop is directed to judges having experience in the following fields: IT law, administrative law, constitutional law, tax law, social security law, non-discrimination law, liability of public bodies, liability inherent to the use of AI systems or digital equipment/applications. In addition, judges who are interested in law, technology and AI in fields different from the ones mentioned above, but who would be interested in extending their AI interest to these fields are also welcome. The same could apply to public administration officials and lawyers, who also represent a target though to a more limited extent.

Selection of participants is to continue until May 31, 2024 and applications can be submitted via this form.

The assessment of the applications is bound by a number of criteria. Knowledge of and experience in the areas of law to be addressed, as well as a very good knowledge of English, are deemed as basic requirements. The assessment of applications will also be based on the following criteria:

Diversity of judicial competences: the call is open to civil, administrative and criminal judges;

Balance in the judicial hierarchy: both higher and lower instance courts shall be represented among selected judges;

Balance in terms of gender, age and nationality;

The call is also open, though to a minor extent, to lawyers.

Specifically, the attendees will be selected among judges qualified as trainers at national level with a relevant and documented expertise in the field. Candidates will be notified about the result of the selection process at least applicants will be notified about the admission at least 1,5 months before the workshop.

If selected, candidates shall commit to take part in all sessions of the Workshop and to prepare for the Workshop by reading the relevant materials in advance. During the Workshop, they are expected to actively engage in the discussion and share their knowledge and experience with the rest of the group.
