'Legal Aspects of AI in the Field of Health' Judicial Lab

The 'Legal Aspects of Artificial Intelligence in the Field of Health' Justice Lab, organized by LIBRe Foundation under the JuLIA Project umbrella, took place on May 14, 2024, and was focused on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the healthcare domain.The event targeted legal experts and judges who deal professionally with healthcare cases or have an interest in the topic.

The webinar aimed at presenting practical case studies while encouraging the discussions on the role of data and how artificial intelligence affects fundamental rights in the healthcare context. It revealed the European perspective on the risks, challenges and legitimacy of the use of these tools in the field of health with a special focus on fundamental rights.

Ivo Emanuilov (LIBRe Foundation) presented the objectives of the Justice Lab and introduced the audience to the social and legal issues related to the use of artificial intelligence in healthcare, personalized medicine and the use of generative models.

Boyan Dafov (GATE Institute) presented to the participants how artificial intelligence works in practical terms, with use-case-based demonstrations included.

Dr. Theodora Lalove-Spinks, a postdoctoral fellow at Ghent University, Belgium, and a PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences and Law from KU Leuven, Belgium, and Dr. Nevin Feti, lecturer at Sofia University and the National Institute of Justice, addressed the legal and organizational aspects on data use by presenting various cases regarding the processing of personal data in healthcare, including in the context of clinical trials. Case studies from the field of personalized medicine and automated processing of health data in a cross-border context were discussed with the audience.

Katerina Yordanova, lawyer and legal expert at imec - Center for IT & IP Law (CiTiP) at KU Leuven, Belgium, introduced the participants to the protection of fundamental rights in healthcare via the prism of AI, emphasizing on the new international treaties, such as the Council of Europe's Convention on Artificial Intelligence, and emerging rights such as the right to full human interaction.

The event was held online, from 14:00 to 18:00, in Bulgarian, with experts and magistrates working in the area.
