Protect your Personal Data!

Last episode of the video series on privacy online.

On the European Data Protection Day (28.01) LIBRe Foundation started an awareness initiative aimed at the issues of privacy and personal data protection.

Throughout the last two weeks we have been posting a series of short educational video materials adapted for Bulgaria, which were originally developed in English by our partner Association for Technology and Internet (ApTI), Romania. Our goal was to present the topic in a way that easily understandable and to reach audiences at different age.

Therefore, we introduced you with Yordan – he is online all the time and he is very active on social networks…may be too active! However, he is not aware of many issues relates to his privacy and personal data protection.

In the end of the video series with our fellow character, we recap on the main topics we covered throughout the last days.

Pay attention to some actions that each of us could and should take to protect our personal data. Such actions include choosing strong passwords, data encryption and archiving, ad blocking, changing the privacy options of social media accounts etc.

The original video in English could be found here.

At the end of the video series, here are the topics we covered throughout the last days:

  • “Cookies” (Or the story of what could surprise you while helping your grandma learn to use search engines!) – what type of data they contain and how this affects the customized ads we receive;
  • Geo-localisation (Are you sure you want everyone to know where you are?) - most mobile apps reveal data on our location;
  • Internet is Public Space (Don’t post online what you wouldn’t say in the street!) – our communication could be traced through an IP address;
  • Passwords (Don’t choose your dog’s name for your password!) – we need to choose them wisely;
  • Social Media Sharing and the Risk of Housebreak (Burglars are very conscious online. Are you?) - only our close ones should know where we are;
  • CCTV at Work (Don’t be a lab rat at work – report excessive surveillance!) – on the security-privacy balance;
  • Surveillance 1976 vs 2016 (Vigilant neighbors before and now) - Do we know who is watching us?
  • Sensitive Personal Data (Who is using your health data and with what purposes?) – on the unlawful use of sensitive personal data;

Thank you for your interest in the videos which we published on LIBRe’s website and our Facebook page.

If you have any questions about Privacy and Data Protection you could always turn to LIBRe Team.

This project is supported by the Bulgarian Commission for Personal Data Protection, which finances the technical implementation of the video adjustment for Bulgaria.
