In 1999 the day of intellectual property was celebrated for the first time. The General Assembly of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) decided to elect a special day for this celebration and accepted the proposal of China and Algeria the date of the celebration to be 26 April – on that date in 1970 the WIPO Convention enters into force.
Intellectual Property Day is a celebration of artistic and scientific circles as well as experts and institutions in the field of intellectual property.
The motto that WIPO chose for this year's celebrations is “Powering change: Women in Innovation and Creativity”.
