European Cyber Security Month (ECSM) is an EU awareness campaign that promotes cyber security among citizens and organizations highlighting the simple steps that can be taken to protect their data, whether personal, financial or professional. The main goals of the initiative are to raise awareness, change behaviour and provide resources to all about how to protect themselves online. The European Union Agency for Network and Information Security (ENISA), the European Commission via DG CONNECT and partners are deploying the European Cyber Security Month every October for the last five years.

Over 300 activities to promote safety online will be taking place throughout Europe this month, such as conferences, workshops, training sessions, summits, general presentations to users, online campaigns etc. The 2017 campaign will focus on cyber security in the workplace, governance, privacy and data protection, cyber security in the home and skills in cyber security through:

general awareness about cyber security, which is one of the priorities identified in the EU Cyber Security Strategy;

specific awareness on network and information security, which is addressed in Directive (EU) 2016/1148 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 6 July 2016 concerning measures for a high common level of security of network and information systems across the Union (the NIS Directive);

promotion of safer use of the Internet for all users;

involving relevant stakeholders;

increasing national media interest through the European and global dimension of the project; and

enhancing attention and interest with regard to information security through political and media coordination.

The ECSM runs for the entire month of October across Europe. Each week focuses on a different topic:

1st week – October 2-6: Cyber Security in the Workplace

2nd week – October 9-13: Governance, Privacy & Data Protection

3rd week – October 16-20: Cyber Security in the Home

4th week – October 23-27: Skills in Cyber Security
