The 'Artificial Intelligence and Consumer Protection' Justice Lab, organized by LIBRe Foundation under the JuLIA Project umbrella, took place on July 1, 2025, and was focused on the interaction of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies with consumer law.The event targeted legal experts and judges who deal professionally with consumer protection cases or have an interest in the topic. The aim of the webinar was to present practical case studies, to encourage discussions around the role of AI in consumer law and how it affects fundamental institutes such as liability for defective products. It revealed the European perspective on the risks, challenges and legitimacy of the use of these tools in the field of consumer law.
Alexandra Tsvetkova (LIBRe Foundation) presented the objectives of the lab as well as the regulatory architecture of the Artificial Intelligence Act and its place in the consumer protection system.
Ivo Emanuilov (LIBRe Foundation) introduced the challenges facing consumer law in the context of the use of artificial intelligence and the safety and compliance requirements that digital goods and services, as well as goods with a digital element, must meet in this regard. Specific examples were presented with the applicability of consumer law to AI chatbots and agents. He also looked at examples from different jurisdictions, as well as the recent preliminary ruling of the Sofia District Court in ECJ case C-806/24.
Prof. Dr. Tanya Yosifova (Professor of Civil and Family Law, Attorney at law from the Sofia Bar Association) presented in detail the requirements under the new Product Liability Directive, including the role of software as a good, and commented on the relationship between the principles laid down in this legislative act and the Artificial Intelligence Act.
