The Leibniz University in Hannover, Germany, a partner of LIBRe Foundation, organises a conference dedicated to the Virtual Currency as a New Legal Challenge. The event will take place on 19 January 2017 in Hanover.

The conference reflects on the increased significance of virtual currencies and the challenges this poses to law, in both theory and practice. Protection of currencies is focused on state-run funds (that is traditional currencies) as well as access to private capital by state authorities. However, these classical meanings are assailed by new currencies (especially Bitcoin).

The question is whether only state-run currencies should be protected by laws and whether virtual currencies are also covered by the right of property.

Moreover, it is questionable whether money laundering also extends to these new currencies.

Furthermore, the law regarding preliminary proceedings and the enforcement of fines needs to be changed in order to be able to deal with virtual currencies.

These and more issues will be discussed at the Bitcoin-Conference which will consist of four tracks, focusing on the following aspects of bitcoins:

  • forensics
  • economics
  • human rights
  • criminal law / procedure
