The missing link: Regulating the Development of Unmanned Systems Conference took place on 11 October 2017 in Brussels, Belgium.

The main goal of the conference was to raise European and national policymakers’ awareness and knowledge levels regarding the development of unmanned systems.

According to the organisers, the technology development requires joint innovation and testing before a widespread implementation and operation of new unmanned systems and use-cases, and a lack of regulation is disturbing and delaying this important phase in Europe.

The organisers’ aim was to point that Europe needs to increase its pace to keep up with developments in other regions like China and North America. The prospect of harmonized regulations across Europe in 2019 have been widely considered as a step in the right direction.

The conference’s long-term focus is to help set a European strategy regarding harmonized regulation on the testing of new drone technologies.
